这张专辑本身就是一部关于 Kurt Cobain 的记录片。以代表了科本的蓝领阶级出身的 Arlo Guthrie 的《Motorcylce Song》正式开场，紧接着就是科本所崇拜的第一支乐队 Melvins 的《Eye Flys》，以及代表了他早期朋克摇滚情结的 Bad Brains 的《Banned in DC》；《Put Some Sugar On It》是科本曾一度钟情的标准 K Records 式的天真流行小曲儿，出自 Half Japanese 乐队——K Records 厂牌的老板、美国独立摇滚教父 Calvin Johnson 是科本的偶像之一；接下来则是曾被 Nirvana 翻唱过的，也是科本从初涉摇滚圈以来便与之建立保持了长期亲密接触的 The Vaselines 乐队的《Son Of A Gun》；而后，Butthole Surfers 的《Graveyard》和 Scratch Acid 的《Owner's Lament》则反映了此时的科本已经进入开始将后硬核与传统摇滚融合改良的时期。
随着故事的推进，Nirvana 进入了主流唱片公司并取得了后《Nevermind》时代的胜利，配合这段时期的选歌开始变得有些让人摸不着章法，象征意味越来越浓重，压倒性的多于一目了然的传记性。科本在穿插的口述中讲到了当时不得不面对的公众和媒体制造的巨大压力，同时也率直的交代了是如何与 Courtney Love 坠入爱河（影片中此段选曲为 Teenage Fanclub 的《Star Sign》，但并未收入专辑），以及开始沉迷于嗑药，并逐渐对 Nirvana 充满幻灭感。用作结尾的 David Bowie 的《The Man Who Sold the World》和 Leadbelly 的《Bourgeois Blues》无疑是对后期濒临崩溃的科本的最佳写照。
电影原声其实并不一定总是影片的附属品。优秀的电影原声，应该达到让人只听音乐就好象看过电影的效果。这点在记录片上显得尤其明显。《Kurt Cobain: About A Son 科特·科本:关于一个孩子》的原声从 Kurt Cobain 的个人音乐喜好出发，准确的用音乐做出了人生节点，带着人们以 Kurt Cobain 的视角回到了逐渐那个远去的时代，从这点来说，它确实已经可以脱离影片本身存在，获得完全独立的生命。
